Values:
- The more complex a system is, the greater its value is. Accordingly,
maximum order and maximum disorder (entropy) have no value.
- Individual human lifespan and species longevity should be maximized.
Beliefs:
- There is an objective reality.
- Everything in the Universe (or at least our experience) is the result
of physical processes, and is composed of physical entities. (When
we get around to knowing everything about the physical Universe, then
we'll be able to identify the things that aren't physical.)
- The degree to which we can know something is bounded by our ability
to emulate it.
- The laws of physics, as we know them, are correct (as far as they
go).
- Life is the most complex part of the Universe, and is capable of
creating much more complexity around it (especially if it can continue
to evolve).
- Humans are the product of natural processes, components, and events that are part of a Universe whose existence is the result of chance, and defined by chance (including its “physical laws”).
- Humans are both composed of, and part of, a family of organisms (“life”) that both shapes, and depends on, non-biological parts of Universe – primarily the planet Earth (the total system of interacting biological and non-biological components is the “biosphere”).
- Life defines its own values, and its core value is its continued survival.
- Biology rewards behavior that maximizes the chances of life's continued survival, and punishes behavior that diminishes its chances. We interpret some of the rewards as “pleasurable.”
- Intelligence has evolved to deal with conditions that evolution can't react to quickly enough.
- Groups of individuals cooperating have a better chance of survival than individuals on their own.
- Intelligence enables more complex cooperation, which improves a population's ability to adapt to, and modify, complex and rapidly changing environments, especially through the creation and use of tools (technology).
- Education is a means of sharing experience without the costs and risks of reproducing it. Where relationships between experiences can be identified, those relationships (as “understanding”) can become part of that shared experience and be used to anticipate experiences that no one has directly had, nor is likely to have.
